The right route depends on why you want to work in the UK
There is no single “UK work visa”. Different routes are built around different qualifying circumstances.
Some require an employer and Certificate of Sponsorship. Others are based on talent, business endorsement, UK or overseas study, nationality and age, or specialist sporting status. This distinction matters: Scale-up, for example, begins as a sponsored route before moving into a materially different later framework, while International Sportsperson requires both specialist sporting endorsement and sponsorship.

Sponsored employment
Skilled Worker Visa
For qualifying employment with a UK employer licensed to sponsor under the Skilled Worker route.
Best starting point if your immigration basis is a conventional sponsored job. Eligible health and care roles use the Health & Care Worker sub-route.

“No employer sponsorship” does not mean “no separate approval”. Innovator Founder has its own endorsement framework, and Global Talent may also involve endorsement depending on the relevant pathway.

Do all work routes lead to settlement?
No. Some Work routes can lead directly to settlement if the separate settlement requirements are met. Others provide temporary permission and require a move into another qualifying immigration route if the person wishes to remain longer.

Do all UK work visas require employer sponsorship?
No. Some routes require sponsorship from a UK employer, while others are based on factors such as talent, business endorsement, study, an overseas qualification, nationality and age.
Which work routes require a Certificate of Sponsorship?
Skilled Worker, the initial Scale-up Worker framework and International Sportsperson are employer-sponsored routes. Their detailed sponsorship requirements differ and should be reviewed on the individual route page.
What is the difference between Graduate and High Potential Individual?
Graduate is based on qualifying UK study and relevant Student-route history. High Potential Individual is based on a qualifying recent overseas degree and the relevant Global Universities List framework.
Is Global Talent an employer-sponsored visa?
No. Global Talent does not use the conventional employer Certificate of Sponsorship model. The relevant Global Talent qualification or endorsement framework applies instead.
Is Innovator Founder a sponsored work visa?
It is not based on employer sponsorship, but it does require the relevant business endorsement framework. It should not be treated as unrestricted self-employment permission.
How is Scale-up different from Skilled Worker?
Scale-up begins with qualifying sponsored employment but has a distinctive structure in which the worker is tied to the sponsor during the initial sponsored period before gaining greater flexibility. Skilled Worker follows its own sponsored-employment framework.
Who should review International Sportsperson?
The route is for elite, internationally established sportspeople and qualified coaches who meet the relevant Sports Governing Body Endorsement and sponsorship framework.
Does Youth Mobility require a job offer?
No. Youth Mobility is primarily based on nationality or passport status and age, with additional country-specific requirements for some applicants.
Do all work routes lead to settlement?
