Is Global Talent the right work route to review?
Global Talent is designed for people working at a high level, or showing recognised potential, in specified scientific, academic, technological and cultural fields.
Unlike employer-sponsored work routes, Global Talent does not depend on a Certificate of Sponsorship from an employer. The key question is instead which Global Talent pathway applies to your field and circumstances.

An initial Global Talent application does not follow one identical process for every applicant. There are two distinct paths.
Endorsement
If endorsement is required, Stage 1 is the endorsement process and Stage 2 is the immigration application.
Prestigious prize
If you hold a prize recognised under the relevant Global Talent rules, you can proceed to Stage 2 without obtaining endorsement first.
An endorsing body is not the same as an immigration sponsor. Global Talent does not use the employer Certificate of Sponsorship model.
If you need endorsement
Stage 1 is the endorsement stage. You must use the endorsement framework relevant to your professional or specialist field.
The evidence required is not identical across Global Talent categories. Different endorsing bodies and pathways apply different criteria and evidential requirements.
Evidence areas to review:
- your professional, academic, research, technology or creative field;
- the endorsement framework that applies to that field;
- evidence of achievement, recognition or potential required by that framework;
- recommendation, appointment, research, grant or professional material where relevant;
- whether the endorsement remains valid when Stage 2 is considered.

If you hold a prestigious prize
Some applicants do not need endorsement. If you are the named recipient of a prize recognised under the Global Talent rules, you can use the prestigious-prize pathway and proceed directly to the immigration application stage.
Not every award made by an organisation that also awards a recognised prestigious prize will qualify. The exact prize must fall within the current Global Talent prestigious-prize framework. GOV.UK — qualifying prizes ↗
Stage 2: applying for immigration permission
Stage 2 is the application for entry clearance or permission to stay under Global Talent. For an initial application, the route requires a valid endorsement from an approved endorsing body or qualification through the recognised prestigious-prize pathway.
Framework to review:
- endorsement or prestigious-prize basis;
- identity and nationality evidence;
- application validity;
- whether the endorsement or prize remains valid;
- suitability;
- switching restrictions if applying from inside the UK.
Where your first Global Talent application relies on endorsement, Stage 2 must be made within the period allowed by the current rules after endorsement. Confirm the current timing requirement on GOV.UK. Stage 2 applicants must also be at least 18 on the date of application.
Switching to Global Talent
Some people already in the UK can apply for permission to stay under Global Talent, but switching is not available from every immigration category. Excluded categories include Visitor, Short-term Student, Parent of a Child Student, Seasonal Worker, a domestic worker in a private household, and permission held outside the Immigration Rules.
If you have or last had Student permission, an additional course-completion requirement may apply before you can switch (with a specific provision relating to PhD study). Do not assume that being lawfully present in the UK automatically means you can switch to Global Talent — your current or most recent immigration category must be checked.
Conditions attached to Global Talent permission
No access to public funds
Global Talent permission is granted subject to a no-public-funds condition.
Professional sport is restricted
Global Talent permission does not allow employment as a professional sportsperson, including as a sports coach.
ATAS may apply
Study is permitted subject to the ATAS condition where the relevant rules require it.
Extending your Global Talent permission
Global Talent permission can be extended. Extension applications may be made from inside or outside the UK under the route framework described by the guidance.
If you originally qualified through endorsement, you do not ordinarily need to obtain a fresh endorsement decision solely because you are extending. However, the original endorsement must not have been withdrawn.
Evidence areas to review:
- your original Global Talent pathway;
- whether the endorsement remains in force, where applicable;
- whether the relevant prize remains acceptable, where applicable;
- evidence that you earned money in the UK;
- the connection between those earnings and your endorsed field or qualifying prize;
- continued suitability.
For extension, the guidance requires earnings in the UK during your previous Global Talent permission to be connected with the field that led to your endorsement, or with a field related to the subject matter of your qualifying prize. The source does not prescribe a minimum income threshold — do not treat the earned-money test as a salary threshold. Independent, verifiable evidence can be considered.

A partner and children may be able to apply as dependants, subject to the separate dependant requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need an employer to sponsor a Global Talent visa?
No. Global Talent does not use the employer Certificate of Sponsorship model. Depending on your circumstances, you will instead normally need endorsement under the relevant Global Talent framework or qualification through the prestigious-prize pathway.
Does every Global Talent applicant need endorsement?
No. Applicants relying on a recognised prestigious prize can proceed without Stage 1 endorsement. Other applicants generally need to follow the relevant endorsement pathway before or alongside Stage 2.
What is Stage 1?
Stage 1 is the endorsement process. It is separate from the application for entry clearance or permission to stay under Global Talent.
What is Stage 2?
Stage 2 is the immigration application for entry clearance or permission to stay. It is based on a qualifying endorsement or, where applicable, a recognised prestigious prize.
Is every major international award a qualifying prestigious prize?
No. The exact prize must fall within the current Global Talent prestigious-prize framework. An award from an organisation that also gives an eligible prize is not automatically sufficient.
Is there an English-language requirement for an initial Global Talent application?
The Home Office guidance used for this page does not establish a general English-language requirement for the initial Global Talent application. English requirements appearing in this guidance relate to settlement. Confirm the current Immigration Rules before applying.
Can I switch to Global Talent from inside the UK?
Some applicants can switch in the UK, but not from every immigration category. Specific categories are excluded, and applicants switching from Student permission may also need to meet a study-completion requirement.
Do I need a new endorsement when extending Global Talent permission?
Not simply because you are extending. If you originally qualified through endorsement, the guidance states that a fresh endorsement decision is not required for an extension, although the endorsement must not have been withdrawn.
Is there a minimum salary for a Global Talent extension?
The guidance used for this page does not set a minimum salary threshold. It requires an applicant extending under Global Talent to have earned money in the UK in the relevant expert field or a field related to the qualifying prize.
Can Global Talent lead to settlement?
Yes. Global Talent can lead to settlement, but the qualifying framework varies according to how the applicant originally qualified. The detailed settlement requirements belong on the separate Global Talent settlement page.
