PhD and STEM PhD Salary Options for Skilled Worker Visas

Some Skilled Worker applicants can rely on a relevant PhD when their salary is assessed, and a STEM PhD (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) can be treated differently again. But a PhD does not automatically qualify you, not every PhD is relevant to every job, and all the other Skilled Worker requirements still apply. This page explains when a doctorate helps — the salary figures themselves live on the salary page.

In brief

  • Some applicants can rely on a relevant PhD when salary is assessed; a STEM PhD can be treated differently again.
  • A PhD does not automatically qualify you, and not every PhD is relevant to every job.
  • All other Skilled Worker requirements still apply.
  • The guide explains when a doctorate helps — the salary figures live on the salary page.

What is a relevant PhD?

The Immigration Rules recognise certain doctoral qualifications where they are relevant to the sponsored role. The assessment is not based simply on holding a doctorate — the relationship between the qualification, the occupation and the sponsored role all matter.

Holding any doctorate is not enough on its own. The occupation must be one that the rules treat as eligible for PhD points, and the qualification must be genuinely relevant to the job you're being sponsored to do.

What is a STEM PhD?

Some doctoral qualifications in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics are treated differently within the Skilled Worker salary provisions from non-STEM PhDs. Whether a subject counts as STEM for these purposes is set by the rules — this page does not apply its own STEM definition, and you may need to explain why your qualification is a STEM subject.

Does my PhD qualify?

Answer a few questions to see your likely pathway. This tool points you to the right salary option and guidance — it does not decide your eligibility or calculate your salary.

Guidance only — not a decision on your application, and not a salary calculation. Confirm your position on GOV.UK or with an adviser.

Qualification relevance

Holding a doctorate alone is not enough. The qualification should be relevant to the sponsored occupation or role as required by the Skilled Worker rules — and you'll usually need to give a credible explanation of how the PhD is relevant to the job. Whether a particular PhD is relevant to a particular role is a rules-and-evidence question best worked through with the salary assessment, not decided in the abstract.

Salary assessment

Where the rules allow a PhD-related salary option, the salary is calculated under the standard Skilled Worker salary provisions — on this site, a relevant PhD is Option B and a relevant STEM PhD is Option C. We don't repeat the figures here so there's a single source to keep up to date.

Overseas PhDs

If your qualification was obtained outside the UK, you may need qualification-recognition evidence showing it meets the recognised standard required by the immigration rules. Qualification recognition and immigration eligibility are separate assessments — recognition confirms what your qualification is equivalent to; it doesn't by itself grant permission.

→ Qualification recognition (overseas-qualification guidance)

Evidence

Depending on your circumstances, evidence may include:

  • your doctoral qualification
  • qualification-recognition evidence, where required for an overseas PhD
  • supporting documents showing the PhD's relevance to the sponsored role

This isn't a rigid checklist — the exact evidence depends on your qualification, occupation and sponsor.

Relationship with occupation codes

A PhD can't be considered in isolation. It's assessed together with your occupation code, the sponsored role and the salary — and the occupation itself must be one the rules treat as eligible for PhD points.

Relevant PhD vs New Entrant

These are separate Skilled Worker mechanisms — one is about your qualification, the other about your career stage. Check whichever fits (occasionally both may be worth comparing).

Settlement

Having relied on a PhD salary option does not create a different settlement route. Settlement remains subject to the Skilled Worker settlement rules.

Common mistakes

  • Believing every PhD qualifies — only relevant doctoral qualifications, in eligible occupations, can be relied upon.
  • Assuming every STEM qualification is automatically accepted — a STEM subject alone isn't enough; the PhD must also be relevant to the role.
  • Confusing qualification recognition with immigration permission — they are different assessments.
  • Thinking a PhD replaces sponsorship — a sponsor is still required.
  • Believing a PhD guarantees a visa — all the other Skilled Worker requirements still apply.
